POC

Products of Conception Testing

Products of Conception (POC) testing is a tool for patients who have experienced a pregnancy loss and want to investigate the potential causes.

At Luminary Genetics, we use next generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate whether extra or missing chromosomes (aneuploidy) are present. This investigation can help identify the cause of the loss and inform reproductive choices to avoid loss in the future.

Depending on the outcome of POC testing, further testing may be recommended for patients/couples who have experienced a loss. The Genetic Counseling Team at Luminary Genetics is available to assist in these cases.

  • Test results often provide an explanation for the miscarriage and help patients cope with the emotional aspects of loss. Finding an explanation for a miscarriage can also offer cost savings by decreasing the need for other investigational studies to identify other causes.*

  • A healthy cell typically has 46 chromosomes, 23 of which come from the egg and 23 from the sperm. When there are too many or too few chromosomes in a pregnancy, the most likely outcome is miscarriage.

~ 50% of miscarriages in the first trimester are due to extra or missing chromosomes, also known as aneuploidy.

A better approach

We use a molecular approach to investigate informative markers to detect and rule out maternal cell contamination*. Publications have shown that maternal cell contamination (MCC) is present in a significant number of normal 46,XX pregnancies which can give misleading results to patients and providers.
